Three useful, low-maintenance plants for a peaceful environment
Tips and tricks
In addition to livening up your space, plants help purify the ambient air and possess certain therapeutic properties. Of course, not all plants are equal and some are better suited to an interior setting than others. Here are three plants that are easy to care for and whose recognized benefits will help improve your quality of life.
1 – Aloe Vera: the lily of the desert
Origin
Aloe vera is a member of the succulent family, which also includes the onion and the lily. Arid semi-desert zones constitute its natural habitat. It is recognizable by its shallow roots and triangular, fleshy leaves with serrated edges.
Benefits
“Aloe vera” is Latin for “real aloe.” There are over 200 species of aloe, but only a handful—the real ones— possess the therapeutic properties with which the plant has become associated. Aloe vera produces two substances: latex and gel. The gel is at the core of its fleshy green leaves. It can be used as an emollient to promote healing of skin wounds and other conditions.
Maintenance tip
Since aloe normally grows in a hot, dry climate, avoid excessive watering and keep it near a sunny window, where a maximum of light will make it prosper.
2 – Chlorophytum: the spider plant
Origin
Chlorophytum is a green plant from South Africa. A member of the agave family, it is known for its dense foliage, which appears as long, thin stems cascading on all sides.
Benefits
In addition to its rich foliage, chlorophytum is widely known for its ability to purify air of toxic emanations from ink, smoke, paint, varnish, and other harsh substances.
Maintenance tip
The spider plant requires regular though moderate watering, which makes it easy to care for all year round. It is best to lightly spray the leaves so as to match the humid conditions of its natural habitat. Trick: Place the plant in a room filled with moist air, such as the bathroom. Also, make sure it is placed near a window for light, but avoid direct sunlight.
3 – Spathiphyllum: the moon flower
Origin
The moon flower hails from Colombia. It is a magnificient plant that blooms periodically. Planted in a large pot, it can grow to an enormous size indeed, as it adapts to the space allotted to it.
Benefits
NASA researchers have found that spathiphyllum has purifying properties that help control formaldehyde, benzene and carbon monoxide levels in the ambient air.
Maintenance tip
When allowed to grow under optimal conditions, the moon flower is a robust plant with a long life expectancy. To keep it a long time, best place it near a window, but away from direct sunlight. The plant thrives in a humid environment, so avoid sources of heat, which can dry out the air.
