Heading toward the heat: demystifying the steam bath and sauna

For both newcomers and seasoned spa-goers, the hot portion of the water circuit at Bota Bota can seem complex, perhaps even intimidating. The steam bath and sauna are often skipped by many passengers, uneasy with the very concept of these spaces.

But knowledge is power and the key to fully appreciating the water circuit. Embrace this first step with open arms: heat is your best ally!

In praise of steam, in the hammam

The steam bath, more commonly known as the hammam, has its roots in the Ottoman Empire and North Africa. A centuries-old tradition, it helps hydrate the skin, clear the airways, and promote deep relaxation through moist heat. You might choose this option, for instance, if you suffer from seasonal allergies.

At Bota Bota, two steam baths are available. The first, located onboard, features large windows overlooking one of the terraces, offering passengers a warm, light-filled cocoon with scents of eucalyptus and white pear. First-timers could appreciate this one for its brightness and direct access to the cold bath just outside.

The second, located in the Gardens, draws inspiration from the more subdued aesthetics of traditional hammams. Without windows, it evokes the cozy atmosphere of a ship’s hull. Here, essential oils of eucalyptus and orange gently fill the air.

The benefits of dry heat, in the sauna

At first glance, the dry heat of the sauna can be daunting. It may catch you off guard, but if approached mindfully, it offers numerous benefits.

Improved blood circulation, relief of muscle pain, and a boosted immune system are among the most well-known advantages. You could chose the sauna the day following a workout or intense physical exertion.

At Bota Bota, saunas can be found both onboard and in the Gardens, offering stunning views of Montreal, the St. Lawrence River, and the surrounding nature. Regulars often gravitate toward the sauna over the water, which is also a staff favorite.

The city sauna, infused with lime, is located on the top deck of the boat and promises a spectacular panoramic view of the city. As the largest sauna onboard, it gives you the freedom to choose your perfect spot.

Let your body be the guide

As with any demanding activity, it’s highly recommended to listen to your body—everyone reacts differently depending on their limits. This first step of the water circuit might feel uncomfortable at first, but it’s essential to know your boundaries. Here, performance has no place.

Here are some tips to fully enjoy this first step:

  • During your 4-hour stay, you’ll have the chance to complete the three steps of the water circuit 3 to 4 times. Use these cycles to gradually increase your time in the sauna and steam bath. Ideally, the hot phase lasts between 10 and 20 minutes depending on individual preference.
  • Choose your spot based on your tolerance. The higher up you sit in a sauna, the hotter it will be. Pouring water on the stones also increases the heat.
  • Each sauna onboard is equipped with one or more sand timers. These help you keep track of time. Don’t forget to flip them when you arrive, they’ll guide your experience.
  • Stay well hydrated before, during, and after the circuit. We strongly encourage our guests to bring reusable water bottles. Fountains are available throughout the site, both onboard and in the Gardens.
  • Avoid eating a large meal before entering a sauna or steam room.
  • Meditation can be a helpful tool to stay grounded in the present and fully surrender to the heat. The river sauna onboard plays guided bilingual meditations every hour, starting at 11 a.m. daily.
  • 100% Bota Bota essential oil blends are available in the boutique, so you can bring the experience home! Just a few drops in the shower or a diffuser can prolong your relaxation.

The water circuit and its three steps are not a sport—they’re a state of mind, an invitation to unwind and be present in the moment.
