August 9th marks the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples<\/a>. It’s a way to highlight their cultures and expertise, as well as their challenges and the complexities of continuing to exist in today’s world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


Xavier Watso, Abenaki of Odanak and content creator, offers us a perspective on Pow Wows, one of his community’s traditions, a moment of well-being that he cultivates with love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebrating indigenousness at the heart of Pow Wows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pow Wows are Indigenous gatherings, vibrant with color. “The goal is to reconnect with each other. We celebrate our Indigenousness, our cultures, and our traditions, particularly through food, dance, and song,” says Xavier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While each community has its own Pow Wow, it’s also a time for everyone to relax and take a moment of respite. “Fighting is put aside. These moments are powerful; they’re made for us and by us. But they’re also times for non-Indigenous people to exchange and share with Indigenous people, to give them a vision of who we are.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These Pow Wows begin in May and often end in the fall, across Turtle Island, also known as North America. In the summer, celebrations often take place outdoors\u2014”It’s the time when we can dance outside,” or, depending on the weather, in dedicated spaces, such as community venues and gymnasiums. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fall Pow Wows have a different meaning than those held in the summer. “It’s more for us, among ourselves. We celebrate the harvest, the community, and we commemorate and pay tribute to those who have passed away during the year,” explains Xavier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Animating to reconnect: Xavier\u2019s essential role<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s been almost 10 years since Xavier took on the role of Master of Ceremonies at Pow Wows. \u201cWhen I started doing this, it was a way to reconnect with my community, to rediscover what it means to be Abenaki.\u201d Having grown up in Montreal, he didn\u2019t have the opportunity to take part in these ceremonies. \u201cIt was a way for me to be with them again, to give back in some way. I\u2019ve developed hosting skills over time, and I\u2019m happy to contribute in my own way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Master of Ceremonies is like a guide who ensures everything runs smoothly during the ceremonies. \u201cI make sure people are having fun and that there aren\u2019t any dull moments. As a former teacher, I also bring that approach to the stage.\u201d In this spirit, Xavier also educates; he teaches the audience words in his language, explains the meanings of different dances, and ensures that the rules are respected\u2014especially during more solemn and traditional moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEveryone is welcome! Sometimes non-Indigenous people wonder if they belong, but it\u2019s really a moment of sharing. We\u2019re proud!\u201d he exclaims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A friend of the Bota Bota podcast<\/a> Anchor Point<\/a><\/em>, Xavier\u2019s life has changed significantly since his interview a few years ago. At the time, he was about to leave his teaching career. Today, he is thrilled to be a full-time content creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy life has completely changed. I feel so lucky. I get to do what I love every single day. In the end, I\u2019m still a teacher\u2014but in a different way.\u201d He adds with a laugh that this new chapter is like a little midlife crisis that he\u2019s thoroughly enjoying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The International First People’s Festival in Montreal this summer <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While the International Day of the World\u2019s Indigenous Peoples is celebrated on August 9, Montreal comes alive with the sights and sounds of the International First People’s Festival from August 5 to 14. Every evening, the Place des Festivals becomes the place to be, with free shows, kiosks, and international Indigenous films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
